Perforations

Ehikhamenor’s practice also encapsulates works on paper that are composed of a series of perforations -  small, uniform holes that read as miniature, circular eruptions of the head of a nail that has cut through the paper over and over and then been removed. These perforations form shapes and portraits, building figures from the negative space they remove from the surface. A more sculptural, monochrome form of the modernist painting technique of pointillism, the perforations form figures from a neat, methodical violence inflicted on the surface of the work, building a poetic and visceral take on the violence of systems of power and education and their role in shaping identity.
